Cath and Daves photos 043Hi there!

Thanks for checking out StartanAnimalSanctuary.com

My name is Catherine and along with my husband David my aim is to start a farm animal sanctuary here in NSW Australia in the next 5 years. This blog is to document the process, fundraising, struggles, successes etc. I also hope it will be a useful resource for others with similar goals.

I currently live on The Central Coast, NSW with my rescued animals, Charlie the maltese x shitzu dog, Dylan the cat and Pea and Mingles the rats. I am lucky to share my life with these wonderful animals, but my ultimate aim is to open my heart to far more animals. Of course, for that to happen me and David have a lot of saving to do.

Update: 21/6/10 Although we do not yet have land to offer many animals permanent sanctuary we have started an ex-battery hen re-homing program. This program aims to save as many hens as possible from slaughter at the end of their “useful” life as battery layers, by working with farmers. If you would like to find out more about this program click here to read about theĀ  first of many hens we have rescued and see whether you could offer a loving, forever home to these hens who have suffered so much in the past.

We have also started the NSW Rodent Rescue and we take in rats, mice and other small animals that need a second chance. So we are taking small steps towards helping animals and we can’t wait to rent some land to be more help to the animals.

Goal 1 is save the deposit for an animal sanctuary. In the meantime we are looking for land and outbuildings to rent/borrow.

Goal 2 is to buy the required land for the animal sanctuary.

Goal 3 is to ensure we have the savings for the rescued farm animals to live happy and healthy lives. Of course those goals simplify things a great deal, but that is it in a nutshell.

We eat a vegan diet and we agree with the PETA way of thinking:

Animals Are Not Ours to Eat

Animals Are Not Ours to Wear

Animals Are Not Ours to Experiment on

Animals Are Not Ours to Use for Entertainment

Animals Are Not Ours to Abuse in Any Way

We are ultimately abolitionist, but we understand that we may need to work within the system to help the animals that are suffering now and bring about change.

Although we don’t have much money right now, we try to support charities where possible. I will suggest various animal rights resources and charities for you to check out in future posts. I also like to support charities that help human beings, but I always check first that the money will not go to animal experimentation, which is cruel, outdated and often an excuse for scientists to gain research grants and not much else.

As well as our animal interests, me and David love to spend time together, especially outdoors, whether walking Charlie, going to the movies, body boarding or visiting new places.

I look forward to meeting some of you with similar interests and goals in the future and I hope you enjoy your time at StartanAnimalSanctuary.com

All the Best

Catherine x
