seal hunter says he is animal lover 2009 07 24 l 186x300 Namibian Seal Slaughter Cruelty Caused by One Man Hatem Yavuz

This man is Hatem Yavuz, the owner of a company of the same name that deals in animal skins and fur. There slogan is, ‘Skins are our business’. Hatem Yavuz has the contract to buy every single one of the skins from the Namibian seal cull until 2019. Last year he was directly responsible for the deaths of 85,000 seals and seal pups.

The Namibian seal cull is said to be the cruelest in the world. This quote was taken from Animals Australia website:

“The sheer terror of the slaughter can cause pups to vomit their mother’s milk in fear. Once hit several times with a wooden club, and assumed dead, they are cut with a knife to ‘bleed out’ — sometimes whilst conscious, before being skinned.”

and this quote from Hatem Yavuz himself regarding the seal pups:

“In order for them to feel less pain, they need to be killed with a club that has a nail in it,”

In the photo above Hatem Yavuz is wearing one of the obscenely ugly seal fur coats his company supplies fur for. This man has described himself as an animal lover in the past, despite wearing a necklace made out of the teeth of a white whale he had killed.

Hatem Yavuz shows his arrogance and lack of compassion in the following interview with Seven News where he tries to make a joke out of the whole thing:

This man and his partners run their business from Seaforth in Sydney and also have offices in Turkey, Russia and South Africa. Do you want to write letters of complaint? Here are the business contact details:

This man makes me sick! I saw him interviewed on Today Tonight and he was so arrogant.

These seals suffer terribly and all so people like him can make money from others without a conscience.

What hypocrisy.

We as a nation happily kill lamb, beef, chicken, pigs and kangaroos yet we don’t hear much about the killing of those animals do we? Why is that? Aren’t they cute and fluffy enough? Don’t they have a right to live also?

I don’t agree with his business of killing seals at all, (I find it extremely abhorrent) but I think he’s just being made the scapegoat.

If there was no demand for these products he wouldn’t have a business! So instead, the end purchasers of these products should be targeted more than the manufacturer. Who is it that buys these fur products to drape over themselves?

No market for the product = no business… and the seals can get back to doing what they do best.

Thanks for your comment Paul. I agree that all the other animals we kill do not deserve to die either, but that doesn’t mean the seals aren’t a worthy cause.

Hatem Yavuz sell most of their furs and skins to the high end fashion market. He does not go so far as to mention names, but does say that is where the money comes from. These designers and the people who wear fur are also being informed of the cruelty. Models and celebrities often join up to anti-fur campaigns.

I think it is important to target the businesses that profit from cruelty as well as the consumers.

I think if you take a look at this website and also the websites I have linked to such as Animals Australia you will find a lot of information about the killing of the other animals you mention, so we are certainly not forgetting those.

It wasn’t Today Tonight.. it was Seven News.

Thanks for pointing that out John. I have added the youtube video of the Seven News interview.
