11 more Siberian tigers are dead at Shenyang Forest Wild Animal Zoo in China. These tigers are all believed to have starved to death, with six dying in one day. A zoo official said,

“The zoo is in a financial crisis and we haven’t been able to provide the tigers with sufficient food for the last two years. An adult tiger eats about 20lb of meat a day, but the tigers here can barely get a chicken to quench their hunger every one or two days.”

This adds to the zoo’s already horrific reputation. In November 2009 two tigers were shot dead by police, when they attacked a zoo keeper (no doubt because they were starving). In 2007 a tiger was killed and devoured by his cage mates, due to their extreme hunger.

Not only are the tigers starved, they are also kept in tiny metal cages, where they must be driven mad with boredom. Many of the dead tigers were also suffering from infections they had picked up from living in squalid conditions. There are still 20 Siberian tigers left at the zoo and I hope the Chinese government takes swift action to save these animals and any others that languish in the confines of this zoo and other similar establishments.

Shenyang Forest Wild Animal Zoo is mostly privately owned although Shenyang Municipal Government having 15 percent of the share.

Vice chief of the Shenyang Wild Animal Protection Station, Liu Xiaoqiang, stated that,

“Wild Animal Protection Law” does not provide for any punishment for irresponsible zoo owners who abuse the animals.

In addition, “Property Law” stipulates that zoo owners have the right to keep animals and animal protection authorities have no right to interfere.

This must be changed if China want to improve the image of their zoos. Amazingly  China has only about 50 tigers left in the wild, but it has about 5,000 in captivity. It is horrific not only to think that the wild tigers are facing extinction, but that the captive ones seem to be suffering most of all.

The tigers left at this zoo should be released to sanctuaries, along with any other animals left at the zoo and the zoo should be shut down permanently. Similar action should be taken with China’s other appalling zoos.

Last weekend a careless keeper was mauled to death by a tiger at Shanghai zoo and now that tiger is in isolation. We must take action to save the captive tigers of China.

Let’s hope that this year (the year of the tiger) we can make a difference.
